Search is changing faster than at any time in the last decade. Google is blending AI-generated answers into regular results, cleaning up spam more often, and giving site owners new ways to measure AI visibility. The good news: the fundamentals that win in classic search still win in AI search. Here is a plain-English summary for business owners.
Two spam updates in two months
Google completed an August 2026 spam update that ran from 18 to 21 August, then began rolling out a September 2026 spam update on 24 September, with Google saying it could take up to two weeks to finish. As of early September, no broad core update had been announced for the month.
What it means for you: if your traffic moved in late August or late September, check whether the pages affected rely on thin, copied or mass-produced content. Sites that publish genuinely useful pages usually have nothing to fear from spam updates.
AI Mode is moving into everyday search
Google has been bringing AI Mode, its conversational search experience, directly into AI Overviews, so people can move from a quick AI summary into a follow-up conversation without leaving the results page. Industry trackers also report a new, Gemini-powered search box that expands queries and supports image and voice input. YouTube is expanding its own conversational “Ask YouTube” search to more desktop users in the US.
What it means for you: more of your potential customers will see an AI answer before they see a list of links. Your goal is to be one of the sources that answer is built on.
How to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google’s guidance is refreshingly simple: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search before it can be used as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. There are no special technical tricks required for AI features. The same best practices apply:
- Make sure your important pages can be crawled and indexed.
- Write content that genuinely answers your customers’ questions.
- Use clear, descriptive titles and headings.
- Link related pages together so Google understands your expertise.
- Keep your business details (name, address, services) accurate everywhere.
- Add helpful images or video where they make the answer clearer.
New ways to measure AI visibility
Google Search Console now includes generative AI performance reporting, which has been expanding to more sites, and it has started showing image-based search data too. Separate studies are also looking at how much traffic comes from Search compared with AI Mode.
What it means for you: for the first time, you can start to see how often your site appears in AI features. Check these reports monthly alongside your normal clicks and impressions.
Is AI-written content allowed?
Yes, with a big condition. Google says AI-assisted content can appear in Search as long as it follows its policies and provides useful, accurate, original value. Using automation to mass-produce low-value pages, however, can break Google’s spam policies. In practice, AI works best as a helper for research and drafts, with a human adding real experience, local knowledge and fact-checking.
Don’t depend on a single platform
AI visibility can change overnight. One recent analysis found that Reddit’s share of citations in ChatGPT search dropped sharply in just a few days. The lesson for businesses: build your presence on your own website, your Google Business Profile, social channels and email list, so one algorithm change can’t wipe out your visibility.
Your SEO checklist for the rest of 2026

- Answer real customer questions with clear headings and short, direct answers.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete and up to date.
- Open the new AI reports in Search Console and note a baseline.
