Content marketing used to mean “publish blog posts, rank on Google, get clicks.” In 2026, AI summaries sit between your content and your customers: Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, chat assistants, and even AI summaries inside Gmail. Good content still wins, but “good” now has a sharper definition.
AI answers are built from real pages
Google has confirmed that for a page to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, it must simply be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. There is no special trick. That means the pages AI chooses to cite are the ones that already answer questions clearly, accurately and with authority.
What it means for you: write pages that directly answer the questions your customers ask, using clear headings and short, factual answers near the top.
AI-assisted content: helpful, not mass-produced
Google says AI-assisted content can appear in Search as long as it follows its policies and provides useful, accurate and original value. Using automation to publish large numbers of low-value pages, however, may break its spam policies. Google ran spam updates in both August and September 2026, so this is not a theoretical risk.
The winning approach: use AI to research, outline and draft faster, then add what AI can’t: your real experience, local knowledge, examples from your market and careful fact-checking.
What makes content worth citing
- First-hand experience: examples, photos and lessons from your own work.
- Local detail: prices, regulations, seasons and customer habits in your region.
- Clear structure: descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists and FAQs.
- Accurate facts: up-to-date information with sources where it matters.
- Consistent brand info: the same name, address and services everywhere online.
Video and email matter more than ever
YouTube is expanding its conversational “Ask YouTube” search to more users, which makes useful how-to and explainer videos more discoverable. At the same time, AI summaries in Gmail mean the first lines of your newsletters need to carry your main message. Content should be planned across formats, not just blog posts.
Build on channels you own
AI visibility can change very quickly. One analysis found that Reddit’s share of ChatGPT search citations dropped dramatically in just four days. Relying on a single platform is risky. Your website, email list and social profiles are assets you control, so invest in them first.
Your content checklist
- List the 20 questions customers ask you most, and answer each clearly on your site.
- Update your most important pages with fresh, accurate information.
- Add real examples, photos and results from your own work.
- Turn your best articles into short videos and email newsletters.
- Use AI as an assistant, and always edit and fact-check before publishing.
- Review old content that is thin or outdated, then improve or remove it.
